Energy Plus

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

kailey-lemer.jpgI just read today that North Dakota was voted “the least lazy state”.  I see this energy in Kailey Lemer from Martin, a 6th grader in the Anamoose School.  During the 21st Century After School Program she built a robot that moves around & shoots little balls.

Her robot took a blue ribbon Grand Champion award in the Sheridan County Achievement Days July 14th in McClusky.  At the State Fair in Minot this past week she received a blue ribbon 1st place on the robot Kailey entered 10 projects in the County & 8 projects in the State Fair.  she received blue ribbons on all & one award of excellence.  That takes a lot of initiative!

1st Annual Mid-Dakota Tractor Trek

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

I went to Martin early this morning to see all the tractors in the 1st Annual Mid-Dakota Tractor Trek.  They journeyed 9 miles from Martin to Harvey where they joined the Harvey Fest parade at 10am.  Lawrence Bartz, Anamoose, was asked by the Harvey Chamber of Commerce to organize the tractor trek.  Lowell Dusek was in charge of the cooking with LJ Dusek & Jeff Lemer (all of Anamoose) flipping pancakes.  Lowell said they used 7 dozen eggs.  I even got to sample the sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes, juice & coffee.  The breakfast was held in Doug’s Auto Body Shop due to the scattered rain showers.

Thirty tractors took part in the trek.  Most of the tractors were older models.  Eugene Pillatzke had an old school bus on behind his tractor.  Jacob Ammon was proud to be pictured driving Lawrence Bartz’s John Deere,  a favorite of many.  Four $20 prizes were given out before the tractors took off for Harvey.

There were 36 sponsors for the event.  From Anamoose the sponsors were:  Pete’s Tractor Salvage, Stan Martin Agency, Heringer Lumber,  Buechler Oil of Harvey, Martin, Anamoose & 1st State Bank of Harvey & Anamoose.

The Rain Didn’t Stop It

Monday, July 5th, 2010

1-hamburgers.jpgI just came from the first Market in the Park for the year.  A rain shower went over, but the people in line for $1 hamburgers stayed put.  I am full after eating a delicious hamburger & bar served by the Anamoose Cafe.  I have a new kind of bread & kuchen on my counter for eating later.   (Click on pictures to enlarge)

market-in-park-3.jpgmarket-in-park-4.jpgmarket-in-park-6.jpgmarket-in-park-7.jpg

The ad in the Harvey Herald says it best:  “Discover the best at the Anamoose Market in the Park.  From fresh vegetables to farm fresh produce, wonderful baked goods and crafts.  We will be serving $1 hamburgers.  Have a picnic in the park.  Visit with old or new friends.  Come join the fun.  You won’t want to miss this.  Starting the first Monday in July from 6-8pm.”

Flower Power

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

It’s amazing how fast you can plant flowers if you have a bunch of dedicated workers.  Last evening in 90 degree weather (the hottest so far), we planted 6 flats of flowers at the park.  The sweat was dripping off us & we were all headed home afterwards to the shower.

scott-tilling.jpgscotts-grandkids.jpgScott Knutson & his 2 grandchildren tilled & hoed the flower beds (with a little of my help).  Then a crew of 6 women planted the mixture of petunias, salvia, dahlia, & sanvitalia.  Schmaltz’ Greenhouse gave us a real good price.  My camera battery went dead so I couldn’t get a picture of the women, but they were: Janice Buchholz, Barb Helm, Mardi Helm, Barb Martin, Sandy Cartwright, & myself.  Bonnie Helm will be watering the flowers.

2 Years & Still Going

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

It’s almost 2 years since we completed our 18 month Anamoose Horizons Leadership program.  We are still continuing on with projects, but on a smaller scale.

Our Horizons committee met Monday evening to update our activities.  Following are just  some of the many things we discussed:

  • Mardi Helm gives out Welcome packages to all new Anamoose residents.  To encourage them to shop locally the packages  include a $30 gift certificate from the Civic Club that can be used in any business in Anamoose.  Heringer Lumber gives discount coupons & the Anamoose Senior Center gives 2 free meal tickets.
  • Main St. buildings were discussed, as several are in need of repair.
  • Keeping residents informed is done with our monthly newsletter, the marque on Main St., the Anamoose web site-www.anamoose.com, & this blog.   Letting other people know about Anamoose is done with brochures in rest areas on I 94.
  • This fall we will again decorate the posts on Main St.
  • Dead trees will be cut down by the Anamoose Fire Dept.
  • Discussion was held on our area birding trails & how to promote them.  We will get a group together to go on one of the trails.

Fund Raising

Monday, May 10th, 2010

aacf-brochure.jpgThe Anamoose Area Community Foundation met this past Saturday to plan for 2 fund raising events this year.  Brent Weninger is in charge of a Calendar Raffle where we will be selling October 1-30th dates.  Winners will get $100 on Sundays, $50 on Saturdays, & $25 Monday through Friday.

A Corn Feed is tentatively planned for Sunday noon, August 22nd.  Rose Weninger is chairman.  We will serve corn, grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, bars, coffee, & kool-aid.  There will be a free will offering for the meal with a suggested minimun of $5.  A Silent Auction & entertainment are also planned.  Phyllis Zimmerman, Shirley Nitz & myself (Alyce Heer) are in charge of obtaining items for the Silent Auction.

Letters will be sent out to business places updating what we have been doing & requesting donations.  A letter will be sent to alumni along with the letter that announces the 2011 reunion.

Spotlight on Family

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

zimmermans.jpg“Spotlight on Family is a feature in the Mouse River Journal that focuses on one family.  This week Dennis (Pinky) & Phyllis Zimmerman were in the spotlight.  They were born & raised in the Anamoose area.  Phyllis attended school at Roosevelt #1 & Dennis attended Rossevelt #2.  They left Anamoose & moved on in their careers.  But after Phyllis retired from full time nursing & Dennis retired from his job as a cement salesman, they returned to Anamoose & were married in 1998.

They are on many committees in the community.  Phyllis is President of the Anamoose Senior Citizens; Secretary/Treasurer of Market in the Park; a member of Relay for Life “The Happy Feet for Life” team & the Anamoose Civic Club; & Vice-President of the Ideal Homemakers Club.  Dennis is Vice President of the Anamoose Civic Club, a member of the Harvey Eagles Club, & Co-Chairman of the monthly Sr. Citizen’s brunch.  Both are members of the Anamoose Area Community Foundation, the Horizons Program, & past members of their respective church councils.

Learning Made Fun

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I thought when Anamoose school let out at 3:10pm all the students & teachers went home, but, boy, was I mistaken!  Yesterday I went to the school to see their After School Program.  Deb Reinowski, the site coordinator, let me watch the kids make robots out of Lego’s while she & Ms. Hilzendiger helped the kids.  This is the second year for the program, which is funded by a federal grant.  Many educational games & other items have been purchased.  Most teachers have helped out with the after school program & are paid through the grant.

A monthly schedule form is sent home to the parents& they sign their child up for the classes that he/she is interested in.  Deb gave me the schedule & they included:  Math, Art (paper mach’e, bird houses, crocheting, computer games, domino’s, seasonal/holiday activities, book talk & 3 books.  After reading the books they took field trips to the Wizard of Oz at Minot, Click Clack Moo in Grand Forks, & Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing also in Grand Forks. Homework & tutoring are also done during the Monday-Thursday after school hour.  Mrs Holler also gives music lessons from 8-8:30am as well as from 3:15-4:15pm.

On the December schedule I saw one interesting class for grades K-2 by Mrs Bachmeier.  It was the book “Alexander-Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”.  That sound like something I wouldn’t want to have!

The program is run during the summer by various staff members for 11 Junior High students as well as the 1-6th graders.  Last summer they took field trips to the Dinosaur Museum at Dickinson, The Heritage Center in Bismarck, & the 21st Century Day at Bottineau where some of the things they saw were glass blowing, a star lab, dog sled, soil conservation, compass, etc.

hydrolic-lift.jpgrocks.jpgI saw Brad Fletschock in the science room.   He showed me the hydraulic lever lift that his 6th grade students are working on.  I also was impressed with the rock collection he has.  He said many students, including girls, have their own collections.

Appreciate the Businesses We Have

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

alan-hornbacher.jpgAlan Hornbacher spoke at the Senior Center today about the Anamoose Cafe, owned & operated by Connie Rudnick.   He stated “People should appreciate having a cafe in a small town that has good food-good quality & good quantity”.  He is right.  We tend to take our home town businesses for granted & not let them know how much we appreciate them.

Alan also talked about tipping.  “Hardly anybody tips here, but if they go to a bigger city then they tip.”  Let’s let Connie know how much we appreciate her.  Besides the good food, she always makes you feel welcome!  Saturday she even had colorful place-mats & napkins for the “women’s table” (the women usually take the one in the front).

Active Anamoose Fire Dept

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

I talked to Brent Weninger about future plans for the Anamoose Fire Dept.  Brent said a new tanker truck will be purchased.  Uniforms & about 6-10 SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) are to be replaced.  A new pump for the grass fire unit has been ordered.

The monthly meeting night has been changed to the last Friday of each month.  This will allow men that work out of town during the week to attend.  At the March meeting the firemen watched 2 videos on Forcible Entry; & Search & Rescue.  They  practiced these skills & also how to safely advance on an anhydrous tank leak & keep the fumes down with spray till they could turn the valve off.

Sunday, March 28th the Firemen had a Turkey Bingo Fund Raiser.  Seven Turkeys, ten hams, & many donated door prizes were given out.

Benefit Chili Feed

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

large-crowd.jpgI just got home from a chili feed benefit for Sally Pillatzke at the Anamoose VFW hall.  Civic Club members made 7 roasters of chili, but the large crowd was putting a big dent in that.

jackie-dean-lowell.jpgjackie-linda.jpgThe Anamoose Civic Club furnished chili & bars. Thrivent for Lutherans will give matching funds up to $1500.  The VFW donated the use of their building.  Volunteers like Linda & Lowell Dusek; & Jackie & Dean Martin made it happen!  Picture 1-Jackie Martin, Dean Martin, Lowell Dusek.  Picture 2.  Jackie Martin & Linda Dusek.

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Brent Weninger, president of the Harvey Eagles Club, presented donations to the Anamoose Senior Center, Anamoose Fire Department and the Anamoose Area Community Foundation.  The Senior Center plans to use their money for a much needed larger T.V., &  the Fire Department will  use their money for training materials.  The Community Foundation will use the money towards reaching their goal of $10,000 for 2010.

We are grateful to the Eagles Club for this consideration and their generosity.

At the meeting RoseMary Vollmer reported on “Boot Camp for Entrepreneur”, a seminar she attended October 27,2009 at Bismarck.

The Market in the Park sign that is on Maurie Becker’s building by Highway 52 will be moved, so it will be more visible.

Keeping Us Informed

Friday, March 5th, 2010

kathy-s.jpgAfter volunteering to do the Community Calendar for over 5 years, Kathy Selzler has decided to let someone else take over.  Every month Kathy would collect event dates & enter them on her computer calendar.  Copies of the calendar were  then printed at the school.  The Civic Club is the sponsor of the Community Calendar & pays for the printing.

norma.jpgNorma Martin has now taken over the job of putting together the calendar each month.  The calendar is available at the Anamoose Cafe, Senior Center, & the Bank.  It is also on our Anamoose web site www.anamoose.com under events. ( Click on web site to view).

If you have events to be listed you can drop them off in the bank drop box, or call me at 465-3476.

Make a Wish

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

I got the following email from Bonnie Dockter concerning her granddaughter from Harvey.

“Kendra Dockter was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and is now cancer free for a year.  While she was taking Chemo treatments in Bismarck The Make a Wish Foundation contacted her dad Chad Dockter and asked her is there was anything that she wished for.  Kendra talked it over with her two older brothers (Elliot & Caleb).  She wanted to meet a princess. They decided that they could meet several princesses at Disney World.

kendra-with-princess.jpgkendra-and-family.jpg We left on January 14 and returned on the 20th.  We visited Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, Universal Studios, Animal Kingdom and Sea World.  On Sunday  Kendra had her wish granted.  She had breakfast with a few princesses.  When we arrived in Florida an angel (a make a wish volunteer) met us and helped get our luggage and rent a car.  He gave us directions on how to get to Give Kids the World Village.  There they showed us to a house that we would be staying at.  Everyday there was some events planned for the kids and at the end of each day when we returned to our village there was a gift for each of the kids. The place was unreal.  They could not do enough for the kids or us.  We met families that were going through what Kendra was going through.  What was nice was that you didn’t have to think about cancer or anything else.  Just having fun.  I cannot express how kind and friendly everyone was.

Before I even returned to North Dakota my daughter, Christina, emailed me.  She had signed up for the Make A Wish annual walk and thought that her father and I should sign up too.  Kendra’s cousins, Karlie & Emma Dockter wanted to walk also.  The Foundation asked that we ask for pledges or donations from friends, family and co-workers.  They have been very generous giving from their hears and wallets.  I hope we can help some other child’s wish be granted.  “

A Good Year for the City

Monday, February 8th, 2010

city-grader.jpgThe Anamoose City Board has made a few changes this year.  They purchased a 1980 grader that is 10 years newer than the old one.  Brent Weninger enjoys working with.  He says he doesn’t have to wear ear plugs any more.

recycle-bin.jpgThe Board had Recyle Bins made that take plastics 1 & 2, newsprint, & corrugated cardboard.  HAV-IT from Harvey picks up the items.

The Anamoose Renaissance Zone is in the process of being set up.  It will assist businesses in the community through Renaissance Zone incentives & other funding.

A lot located by the Lutheran Church was donated by the Albrecht family.  The city is planning for it to be used as a skating rink.  During the summer Brent will be constructing the rink.

We passed Home Rule in 2008 & the city board started a 1% sales tax in 2009.   The city collected $7,821.47 for the year.  Mayor Mike Rudnick said it did better than he had expected it to.

A New Year

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Our Anamoose Area Community Foundation started out 2010 with a great start.  We have $1900 from donor families so far.  The first to donate were local residents Lowell & Linda Dusek.  Linda told me they plan to donate every year.

john.jpgThe second donor was my brother, John Erickson, from Port St. Lucie, Florida.  He wrote me in his Christmas card “I just got done looking at your Anamoose blog site & I was blown away with its’ quantity & quality of information–so much so that I would like to contribute $500 to the cause (s) of your choice—–”.  John is a Drake graduate.

janice-ed033.jpgOur third donor is Janice Senechal Martin, Palm Harbor, Florida who is a 1962 graduate of Anamoose High School.  She wrote in her donation letter ” Dear old friends & neighbors, I hope this contribution helps toward your goal this year.  Good luck in your efforts at fund raising.  I miss you all & hope to see you in the future. ”

phyllis-dennis.jpgOur fourth donation came from board members, Dennis & Phyllis Zimmerman, who have been generous donors in the past.  So you can see we have a wide range of people that contribute to our fund.

aacf-planning-meeting-jan-2010.jpgAt our meeting on January 29th  Kara Geiger, Development Director for the North Dakota Community Foundation, told our committee that we are #7 out of 41 communities in the amount of money raised in 2009.  We raised $17, 299 in 2009, plus getting a $10,000 match from NDCF.  Our goal for this year is to raise $10,000 as all of that will be matched by the NDCF. Pictured are:  Kara Geiger, Shirley Nitz, myself (Alyce Heer), Joe Weninger, Dennis Zimmerman, & Bill Goodwin.  Dick Hauser & Brent Weninger left before I remembered to take a picture & Rose Weninger was at work.  Phyllis Zimmerman insisted on taking the picture.

We will be having a Calendar raffle & plan to have a fall corn feed.

Patriot Pen Award

Friday, February 5th, 2010

patriot-pen-award.jpgKatie Jund, daughter of Pat & Mary Jund, a seventh grader from Anamoose, received the Patriot Pen award of $75 from the VFW District #3 Chairman, Reynold Buchholz, also of Anamoose.  Her first place district essay was entered into the state competition.
