Market in the Park Schedule

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Schedule of August events for Market in the Park:      1st Monday: $1 Hamburgers                 2nd Monday:  Callie Maddock (County Agent) Presenting Food Preservation    3rd Monday: $1 Hamburgers        4th Monday:  Music in the park by Francis Seefeld.

Bonnie Dockter just emailed me this August schedule.  I have been at the park every Monday, & it looks like it is a success. There were long lines when the Anamoose Cafe/Bakery had $1 hamburgers, plus every week people were busy buying the produce, baked goods, etc.

sign-for-market-in-park-005.JPGThis sign, made by Midwest Graphics & Signs in Martin, was put up on Maurie Becker’s building  just north of Hiway 52.  It can also be used for advertising other events.

Welcome to Anamoose!

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

100_1395.JPG   Today 3  Anamoose residents, Mardi Helm, Barbara Helm and Bonnie Helm presented Beau (Linda’s son), Linda and Raymond Babb with a “Welcome Sign” for their home.  They moved into Anamoose in the spring and I did part of the welcome then and just got the sign done that was presented to them today.

100_1397.JPG   They came to Anamoose from Eugene, Oregon.  Linda wanted to move South and Raymond wanted to go North so they moved EAST and we are happy they did!  They found Anamoose and the home they moved into on the internet and sight unseen they took a chance and are glad that they did.  There is much work to do on the house and Raymond and Beau are busy painting the outside now and have the south side done and are working on the west side.  You can see the paint color on Raymond in the picture - white.  They have done a bit of plumbing and allot of yard clean-up and interior fixing and cleaning.  They continue to own a home in Eugene but luckily her brother is living in it now.  Linda’s daughter was with them when they first came but went back because she missed her friends. They are hoping Kyra moves back with them when school starts.

Linda works at the job she had in Oregon, for a Musician’s Publisher Radio Station on the Web.  She can do this in her home anywhere she wants to live.  Ray was a construction worker and will go back to that line of work when the necessary work is done on the house.  It sounds like he has quite a list to keep both him and Beau busy for awhile.

The slow pace of Anamoose was mentioned several times and they like the country feeling of a small town.  “The housing may be cheaper but the food and other things are much higher in ND.”  They are finding the ND sales tax something new for them as they did not have that in Oregon.

A Tour to Remember

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Yesterday 12 women went to Elaine Zakopyko’s farm near Kief for a garden tour.  It was great!  She has so much to show.  She has an old school house full of school memorabilia, a big house she moved in & remodeled, plus a tour of her home with her & Warren’s large collections of dolls, dough boys, tractors, etc.  Elaine took pictures of us as we enjoyed lunch on her porch.  (I forgot my camera or there would be pictures of Elaine’s place)

It doesn’t seem that long since I blogged on a bunch of improvements in Anamoose, but as I walk around town I see a lot more.  Some of them are:

Compliments Always Welcome

jim-young.jpgI am always glad to hear good things about Anamoose & ND.  When Jim Young, Anamoose alumni, sent me some emails he got from some couples who visited him here in ND, I decided I should share the comments.  Jim & Marie Young have a home in Sun City West, AZ & spend their summeers in Drake.  They usually come to Anamoose Mondays for the noon meal at the Anamoose Senior Center & frequently to the cafe.  I took Jim’s picture last night at the Market in the Park.  The following are quotes from his emails:

“We were delighted to have met your friends.  They are such a lovely bunch of people and we now understand what pulls you back every year, it’s a lot more than just the land.  It’s easy to see how pleasant it must be to spend time with them particularly since you grew up with some of them in what must have made for a happy youth”

“The Dakotas were so different from anything we have ever seen and so beautiful”.  “In addition to seeing you again we havw also come to the conclusion that seeing your friends was the trips highlight.  Thanks again for sharing them with us-we are so impressed at how self sufficient and self contained they are-the husband of the woman we met at breakfast having 16 Studebakers in his garage/house, Vernon having one of probably every model tractor John Deere ever made,—-all this is Anamoose!  Probably every town has some sort of collections like those.  We never would have appreciated what ND was all about without seeing them.  It must have been great growing up with them and we continue to get a better appreciaton of what pulls you back.”

Love That Corn

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

postcard.jpgSunday, August 23rd, is the date set for the Anamoose Area Community Foundation Corn Feed & Auction.  Helm Flying Service of Harvey is donating the corn & Gabe & Shannon Marquart of Sawyer are furnishing the Angus beef hamburgers.  We are also having hot dogs & desserts.  The event will start at 12 noon in the park-or firehall if it rains.

We have some good items for the auction, but we are still looking for more.  If you have good used items call Rose Weninger at 465-3648.  Come enjoy some good food & hopefully you can find something to bid on at our auction.  The proceeds go to building up our fund so next year we can give out more grants.

Fellowship in the Park

Monday, July 20th, 2009

There was a good crowd for the 3rd Market in the Park tonight.  People were lined up for the $1 hamburgers.  I’m still eating on the big bar that I bought.  There was a variety of fresh vegetables, sewed items, woodcraft, perennial flowers, jewelry, baked & canned items, & painted mailboxes & saw-blades.  Frances Seefeld entertained us on his accordion.

On June 26, 2009, the Class of 1969 of Anamoose held their 40th reunion at the
Moose Club in Minot, ND. Mr. Tom Alme, a teacher, was the guest speaker. He
brought back many memories of some very interesting stories, or actual
events as he remembers.

16 classmates and their guests attended the reunion. Also Birdie Rudnick,
wife of Robert Rudnick, was able to help with a memorial prayer in memory
of Bob and Gail Mayer.

What a Boost!

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

We have had 2 $5000 contributions for 2009 for our Anamoose Area Community Foundation.  The first was from Michelle (Micki) Pyszkowski, Chicago, IL.  She is the Director of Enrollment Services for Argosy University.  Micki is the daughter of Stan & Norma Martin.  She sent along a note that I thought was very moving:  “I’d like to thank the Anamoose Community for all they did for me while I was growing up.  From my education to summer recreation programs.  I owe a lot to this little community.  Thank you and stay strong Anamoose.”

micki-largest-single-donor.jpg

The second $5000 contribution was from The Arthur Companies, (Pictured is Rick Burgum, president).  I was amazed at all that is included in The Arthus Co.  in our area.  The Arthur Company started in Arthur, ND, but in 1981 they purchased the Harvey Farmers Union Elevator & built the Prairie Towers facility east of Harvey that handles all the grains & the fertilizer/chemical plant & seed department.  In 1990 the SkyBird Seed Co. was added.  They also have a Feed Plant west of Main St. that custom designs feed to fit the individual livestock needs.

In 2001 they purchased the Anamoose Elevator from Cargil.  Anamoose handles wheat, sunflowers, barley, flax & canola, & provides fertilizer, custom application, chemical distribution & seed sales.  It is great to see all the grain trucks hauling in grain in the fall-& the rest of the year too.
