Learning to Applique

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

100_1123.JPG   100_1120.JPG     100_1121.JPG      100_1122.JPG   Ten ladies gathered for the September craft lesson presented by Agnes Faul.  We learned how to applique by hand and also by machine stitching.  We worked with red hearts and placed them onto 10 inch white background pieces that can be used for a wall hanging, quilt, hot pad or pot holder after a backing and filler are added.  Those participating were Agnes Faul, Leader, Leela Sprenger, Marlene Whitaker, Sandy Cartwright, Janice Buchholz, Mardelle Helm (taking the picture), Kathy Rademacher and Alyce Heer.  Next month we will make a large can pumpkin luminary and learn to crochet.  Just call Mardi, 465-3746 to register - All craft lessons are open to everyone.

Main Street Harvest

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Our Horizon’s Steering committee decorated the 9 Main St. light posts last night.  Shirley Nitz furnished the sunflowers.  Dennis Zimmerman and Bill Goodwin got corn out in the country, while Phyllis and Dennis Zimmerman scrounged cattails.  Janice Buchholz trimmed down her grape vines after she and Buck just harvested their grapes.

Pictured are: 1.  Bonnie Dockter’s grandchildren-Caleb & Elliot Dockter, who were a great help holding things in place.  2.  Back-Dennis Zimmerman, Bill Goodwin, Janice Buccholz, Shirley Nitz, Bonnie Dockter. Front-  Caleb Dockter, Alyce Heer.

Anamoose Area Community Fund

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

endowment-meeting-sept10.jpgThe advisory Committee for the Anamoose Area Community Foundation met last night to talk about the progress on our endowment fund and assess how much further we have to go in order to reach our goal.  We also met the new Development Director from the North Dakota Community Foundation, Kara Geiger of Mandan, who will take over for Amy Warnke as our fundraising support person.  Amy will continue to work out of the Grand Forks office with the eastern communities, while Kara focuses on the western part of the state.

We are happy to report that the Anamoose Endowment Fund has a current balance of $23,707!  If we raise $1,300 more, the North Dakota Community Foundation will give us a bonus $5,000 through their matching gift program.  After that, any additional funds raised before the end of the year will be matched dollar for dollar!  Remember, the more money we raise before the end of the year, the more funds we will have to award in grants next year.

You can help us reach our goal by donating online at www.ndcf.net  Click on the “Donate Now” button and choose “Anamoose Area Community Foundation” from the drop down menu.  After you’ve made your contribution, be sure to spread the word to family and friends, especially those living outside Anamoose.

Anamoose Park Featured

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I forget what a great park we have till I am reminded by an article in the Minot Daily News in which they interviewed Buck Buchholz.  “A World War ll tank has held a place of pride in the Anamoose city park since the late 1990s.  Anamoose war veterans were responsible for bringing a World War ll era tank to the Anamoose City Park…..The tank, which was acquired from the North Dakota National Guard at Camp Grafton, has twin 40 millimeter guns, weighs 6,900 pounds and is 20 feet in length and 9 1/2 feet tall….The Anamoose city park, like all parks, has quite a history behind it.  According to the Anamoose city Web site, it got its start with a man named Emil Splettstoser, a German immigrant, who planted flower beds, trees and lilac bushes on his farm.  It became known as Sweet Home Park.  When he moved into Anamoose, he planted flowers, cottonwood trees, and placed patriotic signs throughout the park.  The park that had been neglected turned into a beauty.  Splettstoser died in 1945, but the residents of Anamoose continue to improve on the park.”

Meeting at McClusky

Last night Janice Buchholz & I went to an informational Horizon’s meeting in McClusky.  We gave a power point presentation on what we had done in Anamoose under the Horizon’s program.  Patti Patrie also presented what Bowden had done.  McClusky did decide to join the new Horizon’s session that starts this fall.

“Anamoosites”-unique people

Friday, September 5th, 2008

We have been getting newcomers in Anamoose, but Sandy & Ron Cartwright are unique Previously they lived in Las Vegas & spent the past 5 summers in Anamoose, but now since June they have made Anamoose their permanent home.  Sandy was born in Anamoose, and Ron in Martin.

In Ron’s career with Boeing they moved 38 times.  He first started out with the Minuteman & they have been in all 6 Air Force bases.  The longest they lived any place was 6 years in Wichita, Kansas; and 6 years in Huntsville, Alabama.  One year they lived in 3 different states.  Sandy worked for Boeing for 8 years after raising their 3 children (and probably packing and unpacking).  In 1998 after retiring, they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ron stated “The growth of Las Vegas was so rapid, (approximately 6000 people moving in per month).  The population explosion choked the whole city-traffic became a daily chore.  We decided to move back to ND-(Anamoose) because of our families here, the life style and the pace is wonderful.  People are very friendly, cost of living is cheaper, quality of life is excellent.  Sandy & I only wish we would have come back (10) years ago!”

Sandy & Ron even put on their Anamoose sweatshirts for the picture. sandy-ron.jpg

Still Planning

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Our Horizons Steering Committee met last night at the Anamoose Senior Center.  We went over our Strategic Plan again to see what we still needed to do.  We have accomplished many things in the 18 months that ended June 30th, but we still have quite a few projects to pursue.

Some of us still have poor cell phone service in the Anamoose area.  Call me at 465-3476 and let me know how your cell phone service is.  The Public Service Commission is willing to come to Anamoose if we feel a need for them to come and discuss our service.
