New York Author/ Photographer in Anamoose

June 29th, 2009 by aheer

donna-hiixsen.jpgWe had a New York author/ photographer in Anamoose on Saturday.  Donna Hixson is writing a book on small communities.  She called me last month as she had read about Anamoose on our web site & blog.  I saw her around town taking pictures & she took many pictures at Joe & Ana’s 1st Anniversary celebration.

Maybe Anamoose will be in a book-wouldn’t that be great!

A Man of Many Talents

June 28th, 2009 by aheer

maurie-relaxing.jpgmaurie-mc.jpgchris-maurie.jpgYesterday Maurie Becker was the MC for our Joe & Ana 1st Anniversary celebration.  He added a lot of humor with Chris Becker involving him in his magic show, & with his advice to the anniversary couple.

Today I went to church & here Maurie was filling in for Rev. Marschner.  He seemed equally at ease as he led the service as he did as MC yesterday.  He even had the confidence to change things a little.  He stood behind the pulpit instead of in front, he led us in a new song in his clear, strong voice, & he also had a lesson before the sermon.  He had a 5 stick pkg of gum passes around to everyone, & used that as a symbol for the 5 steps of prayer.  He said that he gave his sermon “Be Bold in Prayer” 30 years ago when it was written for him by Rev Bauer.

During the week Maurie is busy with his construction business.  I hear he is pretty booked for the year, so you know he is equally good at his week day job.  This is just one example of  the talent in Anamoose.

The Weather Didn’t Stop Us

June 28th, 2009 by aheer

The clouds & the rain rolled in 1 hour before the wedding of Joe & Ana-Moose that was suppose to be in the Anamoose Park.  But with everyone pitching in we moved the food, chairs, balloons, etc to the Senior Center.  Along with the adults (committee, anniversary party & early guests) 2 young boys, Tristin Martin & Lee Reinowski, were busy moving chairs, drying they off, holding doors, etc instead of their job of being ushers.  We lost a few balloons to the wind, but we started the program only 5 mintues late with a large crowd in attendance.

The Master of Ceremonies, Maurie Becker, was interrupted right away by Chris Becker, who wanted to give his “magic act” first.  This started the program off with a lot of laughs & it continued on.  The wedding party came in one by one  so we got to see their unique outfits.

Doug Rademacher, flower girl, in his white dress & hat, dropping flower petals along the way.

Marceline Hoaglund, ring bearer, in her big moose hat, still carrying the wedding rings (jar rings)

Janice Buchholz, best man, with her floppy hat, mustache, & baby moose on her back.

LeRoy Becker, bridesmaid, with his backless dress, waving at the crowd & flirting with all.

Barb Martin, groom, dressed in her best attire, with eyes only for Joe

Ron Cartwright, bride, with his new $3 dress from Goodwill (it had a $29 price tag on it) &  a tattoo on his leg -”My Joe” with an arrow pointing to a picture of Joe Moose. He said he didn’t need to shave his legs.

Frances Seefeld play for the entrance of the anniversary party & again at the end of the program.  Lois Rott did a great job on reading 2 poems written by Judy Derrickson- one written for the wedding & one for this anniversary.  Linnea Kolschefski, Drake, also did a great job singing 2 country songs, although Ana & Joe did their best to distract her with their love making.  Phyllis Zimmerman & Jackie Browning Creed entertained the audience with songs from their youth & had the audience joining in singing & laughing with them.  Ron Cartwright gave a humorous rendition on Ana’s first year with Joe.  A group of Senior Citizens concluded the singing.  One song, “Are You Lonesome Tonight” gave a humorous preview of what can happen to a person as they grow old.

ana-joe-with-anniversary-cake.jpgThere was pot luck food galore in addition to the sloppy joes furnished by the Horizons committee & the anniversary party.  Rose Weninger donated the anniversary cake for the occasion.  Even though we were stuffed, many of us had to top it off with Moose-track ice cream from HAV-IT.

Sandy & Ron Cartwright started a raffle with 3 moose articles & several other people added to it.  They raised $124 for the Horizons program.  There were a lot of volunteers that helped plan this anniversary, helped yesterday, & help in many other ways.  That is what makes Anamoose what it is!

Only 5 Days to Go!

June 22nd, 2009 by aheer

Saturday is the big day!  It is the 1st Anniversary of Joe & Ana-Moose.  The bride was on KXMC this morning & said he/she bought a new dress.  I hear he was shopping at the thrift stores. Joe was also looking for a new outfit to wear.  I  talked to the bridesmaid yesterday & he said he/she had to get his “dress out of mothballs”.  The dress is quite daring for a moose as it has an open back.  brides-maid-open-backed-dress-groomsman.jpg

The forecast is for sun & the mid 80’s.  Come to the Anamoose Park & enjoy the program at 4pm followed by the pot luck picnic.  Bring a chair.  See ya there!

Keep Anamoose Beautiful

June 12th, 2009 by aheer

I think many people in Anamoose have been waiting for warmer weather, as just this last week I see so many people getting their yards & homes fixed up.  There are probably more, but these are the ones I saw:

1 & 2.  Frank Ewert & crew are putting new siding & windows on Rose & Joe Weninger’s house  3.  Lydelle Martin had a new roof put on last weekend.  4.  Katie & Zach Fitzgerald painted their house white with a pretty green trim.  5.  Lois Rott got a new flower bed with rock & edging.  6.  Becky & Brad  Fletschock started on their yard last year.  7.  Barb & Tony Martin’s grass is coming up & they are adding flower pots, trees, trellis, etc.  8,9,10  Judy & Richard Derrickson are adding flower beds & shrubs to their west & back yards.  Click on the picture to enlarge.

Snow in June?

June 12th, 2009 by aheer

cotton-on-yard.jpgNo, it didn’t snow in Anamoose on Tuesday when I took this picture (although they had snow in the western part of the state).  Click to enlarge the picture.  This is a lot south of Helen Nolden that was covered with cotton from the cottonwood trees.  Dorothy Peerboom, who lives south on the same block, said that when she looked out her window it did look just like it was snowing.

Can We Make a Difference?

June 12th, 2009 by aheer

I just mailed in the wireless phone surveys that 22 Anamoose-Drake residents filled out.  Petitions stating we are dissatisfied with our cell phone service were signed by 179 people at the Drake Cenex & 82 cell phone users at the Anamoose Cafe & our Anamoose bank.  Of the total cell phone users that complained 84% were Alltel customers.

Following are some comments that I took from the surveys (with their permission).  Reynold (Buck) Buchholz stated “The problem is contact.  We need an Alltel tower locally (or put a unit on the SRT tower 1/2 mile south of Anamoose”.  In answer to the question on the survey “When did the problem start” Randy Burgard wrote:  It has always been this way-if anything it is getting worse”.  Mardell Helm summarized her complaints:  “When we travel we have not had any problems in other states—–In the last month-6 weeks the service has been NONE to VERY POOR & steadily getting worse in Drake & Anamoose.”  Mary Burgard touches on some other issues in her remarks “Inside the house it is pretty much impossible to use.  There just isn’t any service.  It is not fair that the people of Anamoose & Drake & surrounding areas have to pay the same amount as those who live in good areas & can use their phone any time.  Even out on  well traveled Highway 52 that is a major highway in ND the service between Harvey & Drake is very bad.  If there would be an emergency we couldn’t even reach anyone”.    Drake has similar problems to Anamoose.  Clinton Fors wrote “Service is so hit & miss I don’t turn my phone on until I leave Drake”.

On May 4th we had a meeting with the Public Service Commission where citizens from Drake & Anamoose expressed their concerns about their cell phone service.  Pat Jund told of his motorcycle accident just east of Anamoose when he could not use his cell phone to get help.  The Public Service Commission stated they can only notify the cell phone companies of how upset we are with our cell phone service, but they can’t make them do anything to improve it. I don’t know if we will get improved cell phone service soon, but at least we have tried.  The PSC has given us encouragement & support, but not it is up to the cell phone companies.

connie-rudnick.jpg  This morning I took this picture of Connie Rudnick, owner of the Anamoose Cafe/Bakery as she is the only person I know that is completely happy with her Alltel service.  It must be because she has such excellent hearing.

Get Loose With the Moose

June 8th, 2009 by aheer

design-for-t-shirts.jpgIt’s getting closer to Joe & Ana-Moose’ 1st Anniversary on June 27th.  Hopefully the weather will warm up by then.  Plans are for a program  at 4:00pm in the City Park.  The bridal party will be all dressed up for the occasion.  Maurie Becker is the MC.  The program consists of music, a poem about their first year by Judy Derrickson, & the bride (Ron Cartwright) telling of the trials & tribulations of their first year.

A picnic will follow the program with Sloppy Joes, buns, beverages, plates, cups & silver furnished.  Bring one pot luck item.  In case of inclement weather the event will be held in the Anamoose Senior Center.

Do We Want an Ice Skating Rink in Anamoose?

June 8th, 2009 by aheer

When the Fire Dept. built a new fire hall, it was on built on the former ice skating rink on north west Main St.  The warming house was temporarily moved to an empty city lot.

lot-for-skating-rink.jpgThe Albrecht family donated land just north of the Lutheran Church parking lot specifically for the skating rink.  The City Council requested the Park Board’s help with the rink, but they declined.  Brent Weninger stated at a Civic Club meeting that he is willing to bank up the edges on the lot so it can be flooded this winter.

The City Council discussed the ice skating rink at their June meeting.  They decided to abandon the project unless there is a good sign of interest by citizens.  They discussed flooding it this winter with a hose & move the warming house there, but not hook it up to electricity.  A person is needed to take responsibility for the rink to get this project going.

So you ice skaters-young & old alike- need to let the City Council members know that you want a skating rink.  Call any of the members:  Frank Ewert, Bonnie Dockter, Scott Meckle,& Jeff Lemer, or Mayor Mike Rudnick or email me at aheer@gondtc.com

Dutch Elm Disease Comes to Anamoose

June 5th, 2009 by aheer

I didn’t realize Dutch Elm disease was affecting that many trees in Anamoose till I talked to my neighbor, Frank Sieg.  He pointed out that 7 yards in our neighborhood have trees that are dead, or have been cut down, due to Dutch Elm disease.  Pictured are: 1.  Rick Eckart cutting down upper part of dead tree after Pat & Frank Sieg cut off lower branches.  2.  Family helping with clean-up.  Lots of firewood!

Recovery & Reinvestment Workshop

May 28th, 2009 by aheer

workshop-bismarck-janice-i.jpgWe have been hearing a lot on TV & in the newspaper about the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (Stimulus).  Yesterday Janice Buchholz & I attended a workshop in Bismarck on how the Stimulus will be impacting ND.  Plans are still evolving, but ND did get an extra 4.9 million dollars.  We were referred to recovery.gov to find out how the Stimulus money will be spent.

Shane Goettle, Commissioner of the Dept of Commerce, spoke on 3 reasons that ND was not affected as much by the recession:  1.  Our conservative nature.  We have the 2nd lowest bank card debt in the US  2.  Healthy State government.  3.  Lower unemployment rate of 4%.

Our prospects for the future are good as we have a good business climate, & we have lots of natural resources like oil, coal, gas, wind power, etc.  We have the largest supply of lignite coal in the US & we are the largest oil producing state.  We are the most diverse agricultural state as we are leading in the production of 14-16 crops.

The Whispering Moose is the newest lodge in the Anamoose area.  It is located at 508 1st St. West, Anamoose-just 1/2 block north of me.  I want to call it hunting lodge, but owner John Schnase, says it is suitable to rent for hunters, reunions, weddings, etc.   The Lodge sleeps 8 with 4 bedrooms, a pull out couch, & a roll away.  It is fully furnished with laundry facilities.  It will have cleaning facilities outside.  It has off-street parking for campers & trailers.  To rent call Susie & John Schnase at 701-306-5646.

This is just one of five hunting lodges for rent in the Anamoose area.

Beautiful Etched Glass!

May 17th, 2009 by mardi

100_1331.JPG  Michelle Vaughn taught a craft class of 13 ladies on glass etching on Monday 11th.  Some of us made vases for a long stemmed rose or other flowers and others made a glass votive to burn a candle in.  All were very nice and the project was very easy once we were shown how by Michelle.  She and Lillian Schmidt are shown in the first picture doing the simple steps to get the final product the ladies are holding in the group picture.

100_1335.JPG       100_1338.JPG  Those participating were: back row - Michelle Vaughn, Mardi Helm, Carol Sears, Tami Miller, Kathy Rademacher, Angie Kesler;  Second row - Janice Buchholz, Sandy Cartwright, and Leela Sprenger; front row - Lillian Schmidt, Phyllis Zimmerman and Marlene Whitaker.  The other picture is a close up of one of the tall vases we made as it is hard to see detail on the large group photo.  Our next craft class will be June 22 nd, at the senior center at 1 PM.  We will be making a Patriotic Wall Hanging and Leela Sprenger and Tami Miller will be the instructors.  Come join the fun!!

Signs of Spring Finally Come
