Our goal was $50,000 & we made it! Our Anamoose Area Community Foundation was started in May with $10,000 from the Horizons Leadership program. We raised another $25,000 in order to get a $15,000 match from the ND Community Foundation. We plan to award grants this spring.
The largest single contributor was the Anamoose Civic Club. Pictured is Linda Dusek, treasurer (left) giving me (Alyce Heer, Chairman AACF) a check for $5,000.

Michele & Dale Vaugh moved from Ukrah, CA to Anamoose December 18th. They “rushed to get here” before the 3rd storm. “We didn’t bring it with us” Michele laughingly remarked. Brent Weninger had to go in with city equipment to clear out the snow so they could move in.
Michele retired from the Manufactured Home Industry after 25 years. Dale had his own trucking company. He is presently driving truck for Power Fuels, Watford City. He says its ” like a retirement job”.

In January Wayne Fahy of Anamoose wrote a grant for a ALS Quick Response Unit. The St. Aloisius Paramedic Unit started answering call with the Harvey & Fessenden Ambulance Service in June. In April Wayne received the ND ALS Provider of the Year Award. Then this summer Wayne took a 2 week Critical Care Paramedic course from Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
I asked Wayne to write up something about his job as a Paramedic.
“I became an EMT 9 years ago so I could volunteer to help the people in the Anamoose community because the community has been so good to me. I liked it so much I became a Paramedic so I could do more & decided to make it my career. I get the best of both. I get to do something I love and help the people in our community. Six years ago we put a Harvey Ambulance in Anamoose to help cut down response time. We have 5 First Responders, 2 EMT Intermediates, 3 EMTs, 2 Paramedics, & 1 nurse that volunteer for the ambulance serve that live in the Anamoose area. ”

Anamoose, along with most of North Dakota experienced a good old fashioned snow storm over the weekend. The birds were very hungry and cold. They liked to huddle together on Dennis and Phyllis Zimmermans deck. Dennis had busy days keeping their feeders full.

Leela said she bought a skill saw at an auction & now they both cut out & paint the decorations. They sold at the Farmer’s Market this summer, taught a craft class this fall, and will teach another in January.

Joe and Cheryl Linardon recently moved to Anamoose from Lodi, California. Joe was a contractor in California and is using his talents to remodel the home they purchased. He shared his vision with me and I cannot wait to see the finished product. They have already made many positive changes in their new home. It is a good thing he mentioned remodeling as one of his hobbies as well as hunting, fishing and both like to travel. They have some interesting tales to tell on recent travels. Cheryl was anxious to see snow, but admits she was not expecting that much!! She looks forward to spring and planting a garden. They enjoy the very friendly people in Anamoose and admit the roads after the snow and ice can be challenging.
Peggy Byrd moved to Anamoose from Drake, just 6 miles away, to the Senior Housing Complex. She loves animals and visiting with friends. She is still in the process of moving in, unpacking and decorating her apartment. She loves playing cards, which is good as there are many card players in the building.
PLEASE welcome and greet our newest residents - we are so glad they are part of our community and we are anxious to get to know them better.
Since Judy Derrickson and I (Mardi Helm) started to “Welcome” new residents to Anamoose in February of this year we have welcomed and visited 10 different homes. This includes 16 adults and 6 children. We took the job thinking there may be 2 or 3 a year!! We’re so glad to meet the 22 individuals and feel this is a very positive sign for our town!

Since some of us are on both committees, we decided to have the Horizons Steering committee & Anamoose Area Community foundation meetings Wednesday evening. We are continuing many projects that we started during the 18 month Horizons program. A few of the many things that we plan to continue are: improving the cell phone service, promote Sunday meals in Anamoose, promote present & new businesses, Anamoose brochure, Farmer’s Market & Community Garden, keep Anamoose attractive, & an ice skating rink next year.
The Anamoose Area Community Fund has reached $33,000 which included a $5000 bonus from the ND Community Foundation. The Foundation is now matching $ for $ up to $10,000. We would like to raise another $8100 before the end of the year. Donations can be mailed to: Anamoose Area Community Foundation, PO Box 17, Anamoose ND 58710. In March we will be giving out our first grant money to community organizations.

The first picture is taken on Black Friday at the Bismarck Target store. It was wall to wall people. We can avoid this by doing our Christmas shopping in Anamoose.

The cafe has pretty gift certificates that you can give as a gift. Connie Rudnick & her mother Ruth Ammon posed for me yesterday. The food is great there!
The Lumber Yard has items for sale, as you can see in the two pictures. (Double click to enlarge pictures)

The Senior Center has $5 meal tickets that can be used when they are open for dinner on Mondays.

Mike Schmaltz just added his sixth building to his greenhouse. As his sign says “Business is Blooming”. Mike put in rock on the floor for the first time. He still has the heating system, drip system and tables to put in. He has a little time as he usually gets his first cutting about February 1st. For now he is going through order books trying to figure out what new flowers to try.

The Anamoose Bakery/Cafe just got a new sign last week. The lettering was done by MidWest Graphics of Martin. The Quad County Economic Development organization donated money towards the sign.
This morning at coffee it was discussed that at Harvey it is usually only men that have morning coffee. But here there are quite a few women that like to go for early coffee and catch up on the latest “news”-the men do the gossiping!

Journalists Ada & Dirk Koster stopped this fall to see my husband Vernon’s John Deere collection. They came from Germany on a 10 day tour of ND. They had been at Pete’s Tractor for a couple hours before coming to Anamoose, and then headed out to Sage Hill Bed & Breakfast for the night.
The ND Tourism department arranged for the Kosters to come to ND to take pictures & promote our area to the German people.

This is not pertaining to Anamoose news, but I want to tell you why it has been so long since I blogged. I was having trouble with my Dell laptop computer that I purchased in March, and mailed it to them. After almost 2 months and 21 phone calls (only 2 from them), I finally got a new computer. The 800 number that you call into is in INDIA. Most of my phone calls lasted about 20 minutes, with the longest 2 hours while they transferred me from department to department. They finally admitted that they had lost it and sent me a new one. There were so many errors along the way-from a carrier that only delivers up in Fargo, apparently wrong labeling, saying they would call me back and never doing it, being put in the fraud collection account, being told my computer had been sent in January, difficulty understanding them, etc, etc,
I hope you never have to go through what I did. A Staples clerk told me that is why they encourage people to buy the extended warranty, as then the store deals with all this hassle.
